Ingredient Benefits

Citric Acid

Usually produced in powder form, citric acid is naturally found in citrus fruits. It easily mixes into liquids, making it a valuable acid. Lemons and limes have high concentrations of citric acid, accounting for their bitter taste. Oranges and tangerines are also high in citric acid, though lower than the more bitter citrus fruits. You can find citric acid present in certain berries too, particularly raspberries and blackberries.

Citric acid is used as a flavoring in many preparations of Vitamin C, and has a wide variety of other uses. In industry, citric acid can be used to make good “natural” cleaners, though some may still contain chemicals that are not exactly natural. It’s also now commonly used in preparing photographs.

Citric acid bonds easily to minerals and metals, called chelation. It can help to take certain minerals with citric acid, since the body will more easily digest chelated minerals. For example, some calcium supplements can come in the form of calcium citrate, and are better absorbed by the body.

Amino acids are VITAL to your health because they are the building block components that make up proteins - and protein is absolutely essential to your life!

Proteins are involved in the critical bio-chemical processes that sustain life and are a necessary component of every living cell in your body.

Protein substances makeup your muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs, glands, nails, hair, many body fluids, and are essential for the growth of your bone. They form the basis of your immune system as components of antibodies.

But the proteins making up your body do not come directly from protein foods you eat – your body breaks down any protein you consume into amino acids which it then uses to build the specific proteins needed.  So amino acids are critical nutrients!

Amino acids not only build proteins but some are critical to metabolic functions and others act as precursors to neurotransmitters – the chemicals that convey messages from one nerve to another.

Amino acids also act as cofactors to vitamins and minerals – not for absorption but to allow them to perform their duties correctly once they have been assimilated in you.

There are two types of amino acids – essential and non-essential.

Non–essential aminos are produced by your liver - these account for approx. 80% of all amino acids you need.  The essential ones cannot be manufactured by your body and need to be taken in through your diet

Essential amino acids are called: Histidine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, tryptophan, and Valine.

Under specific conditions non-essential aminos can become essential! Huh!

That’s because your body manufactures some non-essentials from some essentials but if these essentials are not present in your diet in sufficient quantities then you can’t produce the non-essentials. Do you essentially understand?

An insufficient supply of even one essential amino can cause serious problems to your health. This would upset your body’s continuous synthesis of proteins – leaving it short of the proteins it needs.

This can result in negative nitrogen balance, an unhealthy condition in which the body excretes more nitrogen than it assimilates. Further, all of the essential amino acids must be present simultaneously in the diet in order for the other amino acids to be utilized – otherwise, the body remains in negative nitrogen balance.

A lack of vital proteins in the body can cause problems ranging from indigestion to depression to stunted growth.

A further benefit of some aminos is that they have antioxidant properties. If you’re up to date on your antioxidant/free radical knowledge then you’ll know how important antioxidants are to your body and health.

Glutathione and Cysteine/N-Acetyl L-Cysteine are powerful antioxidants while Taurine and Tyrosine offer minor antioxidant properties.

Green tea extract comes from the leaves of the tea plant, Cammelia sinsenis. It is made up of chemicals called catechins, of which ECGC is the most abundant.

ECGC is believed to be where the therapeutic value lies.

Green Tea Benefits

1) Lowering LDL cholesterol - Studies have shown that green tea lowers the amount of low density lipoproteins (LDLs) in the blood stream. LDLs are responsible for the buildup of plaque in the arteries that could lead to heart disease.

2) Promoting Weight Loss - Research has shown that green tea extract increases the body's thermogenesis, the generation of body heat, which in turn burns the calories and fat needed to lose weight.

3) Guarding Against Free Radicals - Studies point to green tea extract's ability to neutralize free radicals, chemicals that could damage cells. Green tea extracts could also limit cell replication of bad cells.

4) Promoting General Health - Green tea extract contains powerful antioxidants which can help boost the body's immune system and protect against illness and disease.

Cranberry extract is an extract of the red acidic fruit of the shrubby viburnum of North America and Europe. It contains phytochemicals that include flavonol glycosides, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins (condensed tannins), and organic and phenolic acids. But it is the proanthocyanidins that exhibit potent bacterial anti-adhesion activity. 8The proanthocyanidins found in cranberry differ from those found in other plants by their unique structures and very potent antibacterial activity. In the case of UTIs, these proanthocyanidins prevent E. coli from adhering to the urethra and bladder.

Pomegranate Extract & Health benefits

The pomegranate (‘punica granatum'), one of the oldest known fruits, mentioned in the writings and artifacts of various cultures and religions, is an original native of Persia. This nutrient rich fruit has been revered as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life. Pomegranates are widely cultivated from Iran to northern India, the Middle East, southern Europe and California. The pomegranate is a fruit abundant in phytochemical compounds and contains extremely high levels of flavonoids and polyphenols; powerful antioxidants which provide protection against heart disease and cancer.

Pomegranates are a rich source of folic acid, antioxidants, polyphenols. The most abundant polyphenols in pomegranate are hydrolysable tannins, particularly punicalagins, are the most important components responsible for pomegranate's antioxidant and health benefits. Punicalagins not only offers safeguards the heart and blood vessels but also plays a key role in lowering cholesterol, reducing blood pressure and preventing atherosclerosis (heart blockages).Strong antioxidant compounds found in pomegranates reduce platelet aggregation and lower blood pressure. The phytochemical compounds found in Pomegranate juice stimulates serotonin and estrogen receptors, thus reducing symptoms of depression and increasing bone mass in lab animals.

Recent research and studies have shown that eight ounces of pomegranate juice daily for three months increased the quantity of oxygen which entered into the heart muscles of patients with coronary heart disease. Long-term consumption of pomegranate juice also helps combat erectile dysfunction.

Pomegranate extract is basically composed of alkaloids and polyphenols. The key constituent which is responsible for the multiple health benefits of pomegranate is Ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is a naturally-occurring phenolic compound which is found in several fruits and nuts. Pomegranate extract has several useful functions including antioxidant and anti-viral activity. Besides, studies have revealed that pomegranate extract could be potentially used as a chemo-preventive agent. Food and dietary supplement makers have become aware of the advantages of using pomegranate extracts as healthy ingredients in their products

Acerola cherry is just another tropical fruit with a variety of health benefits that many are touting as a fruit to improve overall health. And with health benefits such as the ability to reduce headaches, reduce fever, boost the immune system, strengthen the liver, improve the skin, it's no wonder why the status of acerola cherry has come a far way.

The acerola cherry originated in the Yucatan, but is also found in the Caribbean, Brazil, Texas and Central America. But far from the days of obscurity in the tropics of the Americas, the acerola cherry is now center stage among super fruits.

Acerola cherry, along with being eaten fresh, is used to flavor drinks. Acerola cherry contains high levels of Vitamin A, folate, Vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin A improves our vision and removes free radicals from the body. Vitamin C repairs tissue, and helps prevent heart disease and cancer. The potassium found in acerola cherries regulates blood pressure and heart function and can even elevate our mood. Folate is essential for making new cells, protecting against heart disease and for protecting babies against mental retardation and debilitating diseases. Therefore, eating acerola cherries on a regular basis and in large amounts can help you to protect yourself against all these illnesses that acerola cherries fight against.

Acerola cherry is traditionally eaten to reduce headaches in folk medicine and recent research done at Michigan State University suggests that the folk medicine practitioners were on to something. Researchers point to the anthocyanins found in acerola cherries as the main reason why they have been used traditionally to relieve headaches. Anthocyanins contains ant-inflammatory properties that have effects much like aspirin, ibuprofen and other pain relievers.

Phenylethylamine HCL is also known by the name PEA and pronounced Phenyl-Ethyl-Amine. PEA is considered a neuromodulator (and monoamine), and has been widely known as the "Love Drug" because of its effect in triggering the transmission of dopamine and norepinephrine and because it is available abundantly in chocolate. As an AMPA (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) neuro receptor stimulant, PEA is responsible in improving and increasing acetylcholine release through the glutamatergic system, thus acting as a mood enhancer. Unlike D-Phenylalanine which is a restricted drug, Phenylethylamine is perfectly legal for use as a nutritional supplement

Green coffee bean extract is a new ingredient on the market. Green coffee bean has strong anti-oxidant properties similar to other natural anti-oxidants like green tea and grape seed extract. Green coffee beans have polyphenols which act to help reduce free oxygen radicals in the body. Green coffee bean extract is sometimes standardized to more than 50% chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic Acid is the compound present in coffee which has been long known as for its beneficial properties. This active ingredient makes green coffee bean an excellent agent to absorb free oxygen radicals; as well as helping to avert hydroxyl radicals, both which contribute to degradation of cells in the body.  Green coffee bean extract is made from the green beans of the coffea Arabica plant. There are two types of coffee plants, arabica and robusta... the arabica is higher in quality and higher in chlorogenic and caffeic acids, two primary compounds responsible for anti-oxidant activity.

Boiled coffee drinks contain cafestol which is associated with the negative effects of using coffee as a stimulant, this is not present in green coffee beans or the extract.

Bioflavonoids are a group of plant pigments that are responsible for the colors of many flowers and fruits. Citrus bioflavonoids are those bioflavonoids, or flavonoids, found in citrus fruits such as lemon, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, etc. These substances possess antioxidant activities, which help fight poor health and aging. Citrus bioflavonoids have been investigated for their biological activity, with both anti-inflammatory and -carcinogenic effects being reported. Flavonoids are a subset of a larger group of beneficial plant substances known as polyphenols.

Goji Berry Extract contains a standardized extract of the polysaccarides from Lycium barbarum, also known as Wolfberry. These unique Polysaccharide phytochemicals have been widely studied for their cytoprotective, neuroprotective, antioxidant, antifatigue, and immune stimulating properties.

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that repairs cells and reduces the damage done to them by superoxide, the most common free radical in the body. SOD is found in both the dermis and the epidermis, and is key to the production of healthy fibroblasts (skin-building cells).   Studies have shown that SOD acts as both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in the body, neutralizing the free radicals that can lead to wrinkles and precancerous cell changes. Researchers are currently studying the potential of superoxide dismutase as an anti-aging treatment, since it is now known that SOD levels drop while free radical levels increase as we Superoxide Dismutase helps the body use zinc, copper, and manganese. There are two types of SOD: copper/zinc (Cu/Zn) SOD and manganese (Mn) SOD. Each type of SOD plays a different role in keeping cells healthy. Cu/Zn SOD protects the cells’ cytoplasm, and Mn SOD protects their mitochondria from free radical damage.

Grape seed extract contains a vast array of health-giving ingredients, such as protein, lipids, carbohydrates and polyphenols (which come mainly in the form of flavonoids, also known as bioflavonoids).

The term flavonoid is used for a class of plant chemicals known for their activity as highly potent antioxidants, and therefore for their capability in protecting the body against oxidative and free radical damage. It’s not really surprising when you consider the scientific studies: they show that the antioxidant power of polyphenols is 20 times more powerful than vitamin E, and 50 times greater than vitamin C.

Because of its polyphenol content, purple grape juice provides a far greater antioxidant effect than orange juice.

What else can grape seed extract do?

Some people call these polyphenols “nature’s biological response modifiers” because of their ability to help the body fight viruses, allergens, and carcinogens.

That means that among their many talents, they exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-cancerous and anti-microbial activity.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)? First of all, it's a fantastic antioxidant, meaning it prevents the free radical damage (much like the vitamins C, E and beta-carotene do) that compromises cellular integrity and accelerates the degradation of all the systems in the human body... which contributes to premature aging and degenerative disease.

Of course, intense exercise increases exposure to free radicals, so all athletes and body builders will find ALA to be beneficial for this reason alone.  ALA has also been shown to effectively help shuttle glucose more efficiently to the muscle cells, which is why you'll find it a "mainstay" ingredient in creatine transport system products.  It is shown that the combination of simple sugars + creatine + alpha lipoic acid enhances creatine uptake beyond either creatine alone, or creatine + sugar

Siberian Ginseng possesses a wide range of properties, including antiviral characteristics that help individuals fight disease. As a stimulant, the plant works to boost the immune system and circulation. Some use the plant as an aphrodisiac to treat sexual dysfunction – both in men and increasingly in women - and ease the symptoms of impotence. When used as a tonic, the adrenal hormones also receive stimulation.

In regards to the blood, Siberian Ginseng may regulate high blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels, which is especially helpful in diabetic patients. Students and employees have turned towards the plant in an effort to improve their concentration, focus, and overall mental activity. Siberian Ginseng is also promoted as an energy-booster in many circles.

The plant is known to assist the body in coping with elevated levels of stress and, in turn, works to prevent additional tension. This enhanced ability to deal with stress is seen on both a mental and physical level. As a result of decreasing physical stress, the stamina seen in athletes may experience as much as a 9% improvement in their resilience when taking Siberian Ginseng.

The possible uses and benefits of Siberian Ginseng seem never-ending, as the plant has even been given to astronauts in an attempt to counter the effects they experience during weightlessness.
